White Rose Cottage is situated in Constable Burton in the heart of Wensleydale, North Yorkshire. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and is around 3 miles from Leyburn and 6.5 miles from Bedale. The village is a conservation area and is described in its designation as “a fine example of a small estate village”.
The cottage and neighbouring property – our family home – were originally part of Constable Burton Estate, before being sold into private ownership in the 1970s. Constable Burton Hall and its magnificent landscaped grounds are included on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. The Grade I listed Palladian villa an architectural gem of national repute, and was designed by John Carr of York. The gardens are open to the public on specific days in the spring and summer seasons and are directly opposite the cottage.
Featured in the Good Pub Guide, The Wyvill Arms is a couple of minutes’ walk away, is open all year round and serves good quality food, and the village also has a fortnightly visit from an excellent fish and chip van.
Leyburn is just a few miles away and has a good selection of shops, pubs and restaurants and has everything you will need for your stay. Leyburn can also be reached by bus from the village six days per week.
Although most Guests complete their journey here by car, some have enjoyed a short break at the cottage travelling by train and using our local taxi services. Our nearest mainline station is Northallerton. We also have a list of local taxi firms that can be pre-booked for different journeys you may make.

The Yorkshire Dales National Park offers a plethora of outdoor activities, from scenic walks along the iconic Three Peaks to cycling through the serene countryside, providing ample opportunities for guests to connect with nature. It is also a designated Dark Skies site, perfect for star gazing.
